TBS has a very successful Mathematics Department with a high uptake of mathematics in the 6th form.
Results at all levels are consistently high.

The Mathematics team at TBS currently consists of 3 members of staff:

Good numeracy and problem solving skills are very important in today’s society. Staff in the department endeavor to teach understanding rather than just process and try to put ideas and learning into context.

It is important for young people to become independent learners and to be able to transfer the skills they learn in the classroom to prepare them for their journey through life.

Key Stage 3

maths6 Pupils in KS3 are taught the key topic areas of mathematics: Number, Algebra & Graphs, Shape & Space and Data handling. They are encouraged to develop their numeracy and problem solving skills as well as developing their mathematical fluency and efficiency. They are encouraged to explain their reasoning and to recognise that there may be more than one approach to a problem. maths7
Key Stage 4

In Year 10 pupils begin their IGCSE Mathematics course. Most pupils do this course over two years and sit their examination at the end of year 11 at either Core or Extension level.

Some pupils are able to complete the IGCSE Mathematics in one year. Those pupils then go on to study Edexcel’s GCSE statistics course in year 11.






Homework and Myimaths.com

maths11maths12TBS subscribes to the myimaths website (The International version of mymaths.co.uk) which has very useful resources for use both in the classroom and at home. Each pupil has an individual log-in and password. The site not only has online lessons and homework but also has a variety of revision materials, booster packs and games which help pupils to develop their mathematical skills. The topics are levelled to ensure that pupil’s can target their use to their ability. Pupils can use this site to do homework, revision and they also may find it useful to catch up on any topics they have missed or on which they need more practice.

Mathematics Challenges

More able pupils in all Key stages are given the chance to take part in on of the Mathematics Challenges (Junior / Intermediate or Senior). This is a National UK Challenge in which International Schools can also take part. It challenges pupils’ mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates are awarded to those who perform well in these.maths13
