Physics is, in essence, a simple subject. To quote Stephen Hawking, the goal of Physics is merely “a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all”. As I say, simple.

AS and A Level Physics represent the first, faltering steps on a path towards this understanding – an understanding that hopefully one of our students will go on to help progress through their further studies. As important as the Physics learnt by our students during the course is the myriad of skills they acquire – mathematical manipulation, logical thought processes, problem solving skills, independent thought, experimental techniques and communication of ideas, to name but a few. Given all of this, it is small wonder that Physics is one of the subjects most valued by University admissions tutors.

We follow the Cambridge International AS and A Level syllabus, which is broken down into the following topics:

At AS Level: SI Units and error calculations, Mechanics, Matter, Waves, Electric Fields, D.C. Circuits and Nuclear Physics. Students sit two theory papers (one multiple choice, one structured answer) and a practical paper.

At A2 Level: Circular motion, Gravitational fields, Thermal Physics, Simple Harmonic Motion, Capacitors, Electromagnetism, A.C. Theory, Quantum & Nuclear Physics, Sensors and Communication. Students sit one theory paper and one practical analysis paper.

I have mentioned above that Physics is highly valued by Universities. I should also add that it is essential for those wishing to study Engineering, and highly recommended for those considering a range of other degree subjects, including Medicine, Finance, Computer Science and even Law.
