Titanic sails again

Inspired by their topic work on the Titanic and the Science unit of Materials, the Year 2 children set themselves a design and technology challenge: To build a boat that floats or as we call it to make Titanic float again.

The initial stages of design took place in the ICT suite where Mr Thakral introduced the children to a computer model of the Titanic. Using the desktop computers and Sketchup, children then selected materials and redesigned both the interior and exterior of the magnificent ship. Inspired by their computer generated models, the children went on to design and junk model their own boats, taking extra care that the materials they selected would allow the boat to float. Results from our testing found that not all the boats could float (they modelled it on the Titanic after all) however the children came up with many ideas on how to improve their models!
