IGCSE Result Day at TBS

On Tuesday, the 18th of August, our current class of 2026 received their Cambridge IGCSE results. The results consisted of non-science subjects including English Literature, Mathematics, Business Studies, etc. For many students, the results would give them more insight on what subjects to take for AS and if alterations to their schedules need to be made. This brought forth a day full of anticipation, with mixed feelings of nervousness, excitement, and surprise. 

One student, both elated and shocked, shared her joy with us, “Did you know I passed maths? And I passed English literature!” she said. Other students had mixed feelings about their results, one stating that his results were alright and he’s happy about them, excited for his AS subjects, but he believes that he could have done better in the exams overall. 

Furthermore, Ms. Watt, the Physical Education teacher, also expressed her satisfaction with exam day results.

“Most of the students achieved their predicted grades, which is amazing. They showed their consistent application throughout the 2 year course. We are still awaiting further feedback on the practical performance but we are very proud of the students’ achievements.”

On the following Thursday, the 20th of August, the students then received the remaining Edexcel IGCSE results, consisting mainly of sciences; Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Mr. Pradhan, the new biology teacher, shared some of his insights on the students’ performance in the exams.

“The students did well, some even overperformed actually. I am really proud of them and how they have come so far. I am more interested in the Edexcel results but I think they all did well as a class and I am very happy about that.” 

Some highlights:

• 29% of all grades were at the highest grade A* 
• Almost half (47%) of all grades were  achieved at the grades A*/A (English schools average = 23%)
• Three quarters (75%) of grades were grade B or higher.
• 89% of TBS entries scored grade C or higher –  compared to the English schools’ average of 67%
• Our top performing student scored A* in all nine of their subjects
• Eight students (almost 1 in 5) scored A or A* in all nine of their subjects
• The overall value added score for the year group was + 0.37. 
  • Put simply, the average TBS student has achieved over three full grades higher than expected across their nine GCSE subjects.
• Our newest subject, Photography, was also our top performing subject with all students scoring A* and returning an unprecedented average value-added score of +3.67 grades per student.
• Art and Additional Mathematics also had 100% A/A* rate
• Other subjects with more than 50% A/A* are: Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chinese, History, Drama, and Music.
• The following subjects have also exceeded their CAT challenge aspirational value-added targets: Business Studies, Double Award Science, Biology, Art, Drama, History and Photography.

Overall, the entire school faculty as well as the students are very pleased with these results. They are proud of everyone’s performance in the IGCSE while looking forward to the beginning of their A-levels.

Introducing Tisha and Arwen (Y7)  – two new writers in the team

TBS started the new academic year on Tuesday 11th of August. Many new students and teachers joined us for the new year, including returning students as well. Now let’s hear from a couple of returning and new students about how their experience back at school has been so far: 

“I’m Heyoung from 7b, and I really like the year so far. I’m just trying to make friends and get to all my classes on time. I really like all the subjects, but I’m finding Computer Science a bit hard because I have never used a computer before.”

“My name is Aradhya, and I’m in Year 9. Everything is going well so far, but my subjects are getting harder. I like History and PE. So far, things are going well!” 

We would like to wish all TBS students an excellent start to the new academic year; we hope they make the most of the opportunities that they are given!

TBS Journalism Team introduces two of our new teachers

The whole TBS community welcomes Ms Wilkinson, Head of Humanities

When TBS’s  new academic year for 2026-2027 began, it did not just bring in a bright and positive new year full of opportunities but also fantastic new teachers and students. 

Mrs Wilkinson, one of our many brilliant new teachers, was asked a few questions to get her insight on TBS so far and so that students can get to know her better. 

What school did you teach at before TBS and what country was that school in?

“I taught at Haileybury Almaty in Kazakhstan, where I was also Head of Humanities.”

Why did you decide to come here to Nepal?

“We (Ms Wilkinson has moved here with her husband Mr Wilkinson, who is our new Head of KS5 and her two children, who are both primary students at TBS) had good friends who worked at TBS before and they highly recommended it as a great school to work in and one they thought we’d really enjoy.”

What are the views you have of your old school compared to TBS?

“TBS is very inclusive and supportive which I think is wonderful.”

How is TBS going so far for you?

“Well – I think, I’m still adjusting but I am getting to know my classes and the wider community which has been great.”

What subjects did you teach in your old school and is it the same as the subjects you are teaching at TBS?

“I mainly taught History in more recent years but I’m also teaching Geography and English.”

What are some struggles being in Nepal? Are there any adjustments you’ve had to make now that you’re here in Nepal?

“Walking on the road when there are no pavements and the constant sound of beeping! But everyone I have met has been friendly, welcoming and always happy to help.”

Where are you from? How long have you been teaching for?

“I am originally from the UK but was born in Thailand and grew up abroad (I only moved to the UK when I was a teenager). I have been a teacher for about 15 years – time flies!”

From this we have learnt so much about Mrs Wilkinson and we hope other people in the TBS community learnt something new about her too. Overall, TBS gives Mrs Wilkinson a massive welcome and we look forward to her achievements and time at TBS!

And we also welcome Ms Borras to our World Languages Team

A fresh start once again brought one of many fresh faces into our community, and this year the TBS community is thrilled to welcome a fantastic new addition to our teaching staff, Ms. Borras! We sat down with her to learn deeper about her life journey, her impressions of our school and what intrigued her about teaching.

Ms. Borras brings a multicultural background to TBS. She was born in the enchanting city of Barcelona, and raised in the western side of Spain. Growing up as an only child, her childhood is quite different from ours today. She attended a small local school without much modern technology, giving her the experience to spend her days playing outside with jump rope, her favorite way to spend time instead of scrolling through apps.

After her childhood in Spain, she adventured to Ireland, where she attended Galway University. Before she found her call towards teaching, she explored being a barista and a hairdresser. She then moved to London, where she began her career in education and teaching. She worked as an assistant teacher before becoming a full time language teacher, teaching Spanish and French at Hampstead School, London for 5 years, where she was also the KS3 languages co-ordinator. 

Coming to TBS is a big change from her previous school in London. Ms. Borras described her old school as being much larger than ours, attending to around 1300 students. The daily routine there was structured around hour-long classes. The Key Stages had different numbers of periods, similar to how our own primary and secondary times are set up. 

Ms Borras said,

“I think the staff and students are very friendly and I am having a wonderful time teaching.” She also told this that she

“felt very drawn to this school because of how much we value kindness and creativity.”

It has been an absolute pleasure to see another fantastic week across Primary and Early Years! Our specialist subject lessons have been buzzing with energy, from music to Languages to Library, giving children the chance to explore their talents beyond the everyday classroom. Year 2 English also had a very special surprise this week, with a certain golden haired visitor dropping in to help bring the story of the Three Bears to life! The children were thrilled (and quite convinced they’d seen this “Goldilocks” somewhere before…) – can anyone guess who was hiding behind the curls? We loved seeing the students come together for a week of curiosity, creativity, and a little bit of storybook magic.

Music

In Music class, students of all ages have been playing lots of name games, practicing canon singing, and exploring creative movement. KS1 students have been exploring high, low and medium voice through the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and KS2 have been practicing and creating body percussion movement patterns. The whole school has also been practicing The Fruit Canon and Listen to My Heartbeat, complete with a body percussion coda from KS2. We are looking forward to more adventures as the term goes on!

Nepali

We have had a fantastic start to Nepali this year! Over the first two weeks, students have been learning how to greet each other and introduce themselves in Nepali using phrases such as “नमस्ते” (Namaste) and “मेरो नाम … हो” (My name is …). They have also been building their everyday Nepali vocabulary with useful phrases such as “धन्यवाद” (Thank you) and “फेरि भेटौँला” (We will meet again). Alongside this, students have begun exploring the Nepali alphabet, learning to recognize and pronounce some vowels and consonants through songs, rhymes, actions, tracing and fun classroom games. It has been wonderful to see them joining in enthusiastically, singing along, and using their new Nepali words with growing confidence! 

French

What an excellent start to the year we’ve had in French! In EYFS, we’ve been singing some classic French songs, including Sur le pont d’Avignon and Frère Jacques, complete with some fun dance moves! In KS1, we’ve been learning how to introduce ourselves using je m’appelle, ask how we are using ça va ?, and count to 10. Meanwhile, KS2 has been learning to think like linguists, using some fundamental French verbs to describe themselves, talk about their interests, and express the things they like. Bravo!

Library

In the Library sessions, students had an enriching and enjoyable experience as they explored new books and reconnected with their love of reading. The session began with students enthusiastically sharing the titles and stories they had read over the holidays, creating an atmosphere of excitement and curiosity. Students also revisited the Library rules and expectations and explored the different areas and set-ups of the Library. 

A highlight of the session was the opportunity to recommend books to their peers. Students shared their favourite reads, talked about what they enjoyed about the books and listened to recommendations from their friends. This encouraged them to discover new authors, genres, and stories while developing their confidence in discussing books.

Little Yetis

We had a lovely start to the new year at Little Yetis with an “All About Me” themed session. It was great to welcome back many familiar faces and meet some new children joining us for the first time. The children enjoyed exploring the different activities in the setting, with opportunities to think about themselves and their favourite things.

The children enjoyed some hands-on learning too. They developed their fine motor skills as they used tweezers to add hair to a picture and created their own playdough self-portraits. Our “My Favourite Things” ice play was also popular, as the children used warm water, droppers, spoons and cups to melt the ice and rescue hidden cars, food and other objects.

We finished the session by singing familiar songs, including “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “One Little Finger”, with the children and parents joining in with the actions! We also shared the story Maisy Goes to Nursery, which gave us an opportunity to talk about starting nursery and new experiences.

It was a busy first session, with lots of opportunities for the children to play, explore and get to know each other. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again next week for our “Colours Everywhere!” session.

Special Visitor in Year 2

Year 2 had a special visitor this week as part of their study of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks herself came to visit, worried that she might be in trouble! The children gave her advice on how to apologise for eating the bears’ porridge and then wrote an apology letter on her behalf. 

Meet the Primary Leadership Team Parent Information Session

It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome so many families to our Meet the Primary Leadership Team parent information session. The session was wonderfully well attended, giving parents a chance to put faces to names and hear an overview of both the Primary and Early Years sections – our approach to learning, our priorities for the year ahead, and how each part of the leadership team supports their child’s journey through the school. Thank you to everyone who came along; it was lovely to spend the morning with you.
