Last week our Early Years children enjoyed welcoming their families into school to share their learning about the importance of plants and how they grow. Together with their parents the children planted seeds and potted plants which they then took home.  We hope that the children will continue to use their gardening skills to help plants flourish in their new homes!

Year 4 Showcase

In our recent studies, our Year 4 students have been diving deep into the world of renewable energy and sustainable living. Through hands-on activities, they’ve been applying their maths skills in calculating area and perimeter to design their scaled civilizations. Having completed an English unit based on the book ‘Weslandia’, students tapped into their creative sides in constructing their imaginary worlds. Using our nonfiction text from Guided  Reading, we also considered the ways in which ancient civilisations were built when designing the layouts.  With a focus on the SDG topic, students explored the concept of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power. They learned how these sources can be harnessed to create a more environmentally friendly and efficient society.

To showcase their learning, students invited parents to an informative presentation where they displayed brochures highlighting their civilizations. These brochures detailed their unique and original societies, energy plans, and the importance of renewable resources. Through this project, students not only gained a better understanding of renewable energy but also developed critical thinking and presentation skills. We’re proud of their hard work and dedication to creating a greener future and spreading the message of sustainability.

The main news from this short three day week is that end of year assessments are in full swing for Years 7-10. The secondary section feels much quieter this week with Year 11-13 on site just for their exams. Next week Year 8 are visiting Pokhara for their Humanities Field Trip where they will spend three days of experiential learning in and around the town.

There was a highly successful and well attended maths PIS on Thursday morning led by Head of Faculty, Mr Seenan. As an example of the ongoing “Assessment for Learning” that takes place in every maths lesson, parents were put through their paces with some increasingly more challenging IGCSE maths problems to solve. Parents learned how important it is that our children read the question carefully (e.g. 54.2×106 did not score but the standard form version of the same correct number 5.42×107 did gain the mark), are precise in their answers (e.g. $51.40 was acceptable, $51.4 lost a mark!)  and also not shout out the answers when they think they are right! Circle theorem was used to demonstrate the investigative learning style that the maths faculty use, as parents were challenged to discover theorem 1 and theorem 2, before everyone was stumped by a complex A level integration problem. Mr Seenan then talked about how the maths curriculum is structured at TBS, the provision of resources through Google classroom and online interactive maths site subscriptions and how maths is assessed. Parents left well informed and mentally warmed up for the day ahead.

Beyond school I am delighted to report that Aaryaveer in Year 8, has been competing in the Kathmandu Kickers team at an international football tournament in Germany. Not only did Kathmandu Kickers win the tournament but the top scorer was Aaryaveer. Well done to both the team and Aaryaveer for being such great ambassadors for the future of Nepali football. Former German international Thomas Hitzlsperger presented the “golden boot” award to Aaraveer.

Join us for the second Community Concert ‘One Big Family’ on Thursday, May 30th from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in the TBS hall. Students from Year 1 to 6 will perform songs and dances in Nepali and English, along with students from The Shramik School. Donations collected at the door will support providing snacks for Early Years students at The Shramik School. Let’s celebrate the talents of our students and come together to celebrate unity, creativity and togetherness, with our community partner school.

Thank you to those parents who have confirmed that their child/children will be leaving TBS at the end of the term, i.e. Friday 28th of June 2024. Adequate notice is a requirement and avoids financial penalties for parents.  It also allows us to refund your security deposits on time and helps us to plan ahead for the new term.

The deadline for providing the formal notice of the withdrawal of your child/children is Friday, 31st of May 2024. The notice of withdrawal can be provided either by email or written letter to Ms. Manisha Bajracharya at the Admissions Office.

After submitting the notice of withdrawal, parents will receive a clearance form to complete the withdrawal procedure nearer the end of Term 4. Please let Ms. Bajracharya in the admissions office know should you require any school documents/references to provide to the new school.

Late notice of withdrawal (or providing no notice) and failure to submit the form or return the school’s resources may fully or partially affect refunding the security deposit.
