Year 5.

Year 5 had a wonderful week back, after our amazing time at camp. All of the Year 5 staff were blown away by the resilience, positivity and joy that everyone of our students brought to the experience. The children took part in cooking, hiking as well as playing and creating wonderful memories (They were also very good at sleeping too!).

Every one of our students was a credit to our school, they should be very proud of themselves.

Year 6.

Year 6 had the expedition of a lifetime to Chitwan. Rhinos crossing in front of canoes, sloth bears eating from the floor, elephants playing and eating; they saw it all! They spent time in traditional Tharu villages, learnt how to decorate homes, went on jeep and canoe safaris, participated in traditional fishing (no animals were harmed!) and learnt how to survive and thrive away from home. What a marvellous experience that we are sure they will remember forever.

What an incredible term and a half it has been for Year 9! It has been fantastic to see the amazing positive attitudes that all of the students have in Year 9, allowing for them to thrive in our school environment. The students have had the chance to get fully involved in trips, extra curricular days, International Day and most recently, represent the school in Thailand for the U15 FOBISIA games. We have also had the chance to launch our student leadership programme that gives students in Year 9 the chance to make an impact on the school directly and the wider school community. It is great to see life return to normal again and the students being able to take part in so much that they have missed for a long time.

Firstly, the Year 9 students were a pivotal part in our International and Extracurricular day. The students were able to wear their national dress for the day and parade this around school for all of the other students and parents to see. It was amazing to see all of the students with huge smiles on their faces and demonstrating such pride in their cultural heritage. Some students were even selected to be a part of the band that led the parade around the school.

Following this, Year 9 were involved in a whole key stage project of making rangoli for the festival of Tihar. They had the chance to learn the story behind the making of the rangoli and created wonderful pieces of art around the school. It was great to see all of the students working together as a team and encompassing so many of our 5 C’s in the creation of their designs.

Our TBS Year 9 students visited Thailand for the U15 FOBISIA tournament. Since Covid, this is the first time the tournament has been able to run in the last three years, and it was amazing to see all of the students so excited to get to play other schools from across the world. The students put a huge amount of work in prior to the tournament to ensure that when they got to the tournament, they were ready to compete. The U15 team came away with numerous medals in all of the four disciplines: Athletics, Swimming, Basketball and Football. TBS won the Boys Basketball; came second place overall in the Athletics; achieved 2nd place in the Girls Basketball; 2nd place in the Girls Football whilst not conceding a goal and 3rd place in the Boys Football. It is safe to say, we are hugely proud of all of the achievements our students managed whilst in Thailand and look forward to seeing the other year groups replicating the same!

Y9 Mandarin has been surprising Ms Wong with their dedication this year. Particularly in reading, they can now read much longer texts in Chinese and be able to understand the meaning. Here are two examples from Kaustubh and Triral:

They have also been practising their vocabulary about colours in Mandarin and have got 98% correct – impressive!

Well done Year 9 on such a fantastic start to the Year and keep up the amazing work!

Christmas is just around the corner! Just like in the years before, we are planning to give Christmas bags to children attending our community partner schools. These bags ensure that students of our Community Schools have as wonderful a Christmas as possible. This year we are aiming to collect 580 bags!

The value of the bags should be around 1000 NPR. The TBS Community Prefects and Ambassadors team have handed out bags to all students. It would be great if each student can fill at least one bag, but you are more than welcome to fill even more bags if you wish. Gifting presents is a great way to spread some Christmas spirit, and we hope that you will all join us in celebrating and reaching our goal to make Christmas more enjoyable for other Community students.

The Primary and Secondary Community Ambassadors and Prefects

In Y12 AS Psycholog they recently started the social approach which looked at how behaviour, cognition and emotions are influenced by other individuals and by groups or social contexts. The social approach consisted of 3 different studies: Milgram which is about obedience, Yamamoto which studies helping behaviour in chimpanzees and finally, Piliavin (Subway Samaritans).This lesson they changed the layout of their psychology classroom to mimic the layout of adjacent and critical areas of a subway car which was the setting of the Piliavin study. Doing so, helped them remember the layout used in this study in detail and in a very fun manner!

This study investigates helping behaviour and bystander intervention, which fit with our TBS values of compassion and community!

Students from Y10-13 took part in The Hague International Model United Nations Singapore Online Conference last week. The event saw over 30 TBS students representing a diverse range of delegations from Morocco, Kazakhstan, Venezuela and the United Nations Environmental Programme. It was nothing short of an unmitigated success. Students had the opportunity to debate for their delegation on a wide array of interesting issues. These included:

• The question of exclusion from the labour market on the basis of race, religion and gender

• Towards a global plan of action to safeguard religious sites

• Development and promotion of eco-tourism in the tropical rainforest regions of South-East Asia

• The question of female representation in business and finance

• Follow-up on the Glasgow Climate Conference (COP26)

• The question of the effects of palm oil plantations in rainforest areas

• Establishing a nuclear-weapon-free-zone in the Black Sea region

• The question of piracy and maritime security in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico

• Measures to assist Ukrainian refugees

• The question of the freedom of the press in time of war

• Promoting micro-financing of small businesses

• Enhancing the power of the International Criminal Court

• Promoting dialogue in the Indo-Pacific region

• The situation in Sri Lanka

• Tackling the problem of greenwashing

• Improving living conditions in slums

• Measures to end the AIDS epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa

• Expanding access to education for children in isolated rural areas

TBS students successfully proposed and edited a variety of resolutions which were adopted by the Conference as a whole. These will be submitted to the United Nations itself in the coming days.

TBS’s Model United Nations Club will resume in January, any students from Y10-13 will be welcome!
