Due to the current situation in Nepal and the shortage of oxygen, we would like to support local initiatives to ensure an increase in oxygen as cases increase. 

We would like to organise a Global TBS Community Dance-a-thon! We are going to dance for 24 hours, across different countries and continents in order to raise money for those who are in desperate need. 

If you would like to take part then set aside 15 minutes of your weekend as we are going to dance from midnight (Nepali time) on Saturday 5th June until midnight on Sunday 6th June. The more people who participate the more money we make and the more oxygen supply we can support.

As we look to increase the value and capacity of our student leaders, we are now offering leadership positions for students in Key Stage 3 (Aspiring Leaders) and Key Stage 4 (Ambassadors). Information has been emailed to students and parents in Years 7 to Year 10 outlining the leadership roles and the upcoming application process. We highly encourage all students to consider applying for these leadership roles and also encourage parents to speak with their child(s) about this opportunity. Whilst we have struggled with some aspects of being online, the time and space provided by being at home has allowed our students to thrive when it comes to personal reading. One aspect of this particularly enjoyed by our primary students is the use of dialogic talk to debate and discuss opinions and thoughts on a variety of texts. Normally a lively affair in the classroom, we have found novel ways to stretch the features of Zoom to enable everyone’s active participation.

Many of our children are becoming masters in the art of dialogic discussion (and argument!). Should you wish to experiment around the dining table, here are the prompts we teach our classes to support back and forth discussion: 

Whether this is based on a part of a novel, the events of the day, or in case of Battle of the Books (where Year 5 and 6 have each read six novels), determining the best of a great bunch of stories, this means to instigate and sustain respectful and insightful dialogue is invaluable across all subjects. 

Although resourcing reading at home can definitely be challenging (how would we survive in a pre-Kindle world?), our primary students make use of a couple of excellent apps and websites to support their development. Impressively (though perhaps less so in terms of screen time), our children have notched up over 5000 lessons (or 4000 hours) on Reading Eggs, our phonics and reading comprehension program, so far this academic year. Our younger students have been able to take advantage of a new subscription to Oxford Owl, giving instant access to every book for each book band colour on tablets and computers (no more empty baskets in the library). We know that parents have been working incredibly hard at home to support this engagement and we can see this through both children’s progress and their love for reading.

In Year 7 Drama lessons, students have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming assessment of “Theseus and the Minotaur.” In this assessment, they are not only creatively acting out the Greek myth but they are also using various skills such as canon, narration, split stage, physical theatre and still image. We had originally aimed to incorporate choral speaking and moving in unison, but the difficulties of being online meant that students had to adapt their work from what they had planned in the classroom. Considering the daunting task of slaying the Minotaur

As assignment week nears, the Year 9s are completing 2 strands to their end-of-year assessments. The first task leads the students to explore scenography – specifically costume design – with the second being a solo performance that was inspired by a character in the Melodramatic script “The Black Hearted Villain.”  The latter is still underway, with the performance being completed in the next few weeks; however, below are some examples of their completed costume design. Students had to consider not only how they would like their character to dress, but also the material and colour they would like to use, justifying their choices. 

Year 10 students in Drama have been exploring the play “Thick as a Brick” by John Godber. In this play, a supply teacher joins a run down and low attaining high school, which has demotivated and disengaged students. It is a political play about the transformative power of the Arts in education and how interest, encouragement and perseverance are key attributes in life. Our students, last week, were working upon the opening section of the musical text, presenting it as a choral chant interspersed with monologue segments. Here is the link to their finished product – however, please be aware that there is some inappropriate language in it. Despite working online, they have been creative with their ideas, responding well to feedback and guidance of the teacher as well as their peers whilst presenting a confident and engaging piece of work. So much so that even John Godber Company (the playwright’s company) liked it on Twitter!

Ishika has been nominated as student of the week this week as during our KS5 meeting both her mentor and teachers discussed how moved they have been by her community mentality throughout this year. She has looked into running activities to help students practise healthy well-being habits and have a space to discuss any problems.

Ishika is always willing to help be it showing a new student around or offering to run a club for younger year groups. She is a very compassionate young person and we are very grateful for her kindness.

She says – “make a to do and tick off all that you complete”.

 In line with school policy, we are providing all parents with the final date that you need to provide the school with your official notice of withdrawal if this will be the last term for your child/children at TBS. The due date for the official notice of withdrawal is  Wednesday 2nd June 2021.  

 Please, therefore, inform Ms. Bajracharya (admissions@tbs.edu.np) in the Admissions Office, if you wish to withdraw your child from TBS by Wednesday 2nd June 2021.  

 In line with school policy, failure to give such notice will result in the security deposit being retained in full.  

 Parents shall receive a Clearance Form to complete the withdrawal procedure nearer the end of this term. Failure to submit the form or returning all school resources in good order will partially affect the refund of the security deposit (parents will always be notified in such instances).
