It has been a vibrant and meaningful week of celebration, awareness and community this week, filled with important awareness initiatives, cultural celebrations, and exciting developments for our school community.

Breast Cancer Awareness Week

This week, our school came together to support Breast Cancer Awareness Week, an important initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer and show solidarity with those affected by this illness. On Wednesday, our Primary & Early Years students participated in Wear Pink Wednesday, with students and staff donning pink attire to show their support. Our dedicated Community Ambassadors worked busily throughout the week, selling pink pins to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. We are incredibly proud of the compassion and commitment our students have shown in supporting this cause.

EYFS Thakali Restaurant Adventure

This week, the Early Years children focused on the theme Nepal: Our Home. On Tuesday, they went on an exciting trip to a traditional Thakali restaurant where they sat around a communal table, sharing a typical Thakali meal. They enjoyed tasting dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup and rice), tarkari (vegetable curry), aloo (potatoes), and saag (leafy greens), all served on traditional brass plates. 

On Thursday, the children then excitedly hosted their own Thakali restaurant event back at school which due to the rain was hosted indoors.  The children helped to prepare simple Thakali-inspired dishes, made a special welcoming banner and wore traditional Nepali clothing. The event was also a great opportunity for the children to practise their communication skills, by welcoming and serving their parents, role-playing customer and server interactions all in a fun atmosphere! Through generous parental contributions we also raised 7720 NPR to buy some books for the Early Years children at our community partner school, Shree Tika.Thank you to all the parents, siblings and family members who came and helped make the afternoon  such a wonderful celebration of our special community and our learning.

Understanding Halloween: An RE Assembly

As part of our ongoing Religious Education programme, delivered through assemblies, we explored the history of Halloween. Students learned about the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain and how the tradition evolved over time, incorporating influences from various cultures and religions. The assembly provided a wonderful opportunity for our multi-faith community to understand the historical and cultural context of this celebration, fostering respect and understanding among all our students.

How we Celebrated Tihar and Diwali

Before half term, our students learned about the significance and traditions of Tihar and Diwali in assembly. This week, we revisited this learning and created a wonderful opportunity for children to share how their families celebrated these festivals of lights. Students enthusiastically shared their experiences and this was presented in assembly, from lighting diyas and creating rangoli designs to performing puja and celebrating with family and friends. It was wonderful to hear the diverse ways our community honors these important cultural traditions, and the sharing fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation among all our students.

Halloween Dress Up Day

Students had the optional opportunity to dress up on Friday, October 31st, Halloween. The creativity on display was fantastic, with students showcasing imaginative costumes ranging from superheroes to storybook characters. It was a delightful day filled with laughter and fun, and we appreciated how our community came together to make it an inclusive celebration for all.

Parent Information Session: Expeditions

We are also very pleased to announce that we recently held a Parent Information Session about our upcoming expeditions program. These educational trips provide invaluable learning experiences outside the classroom, helping students develop independence, teamwork, and a deeper connection with the world around them. The sessions were very well attended, and we are excited about the adventures that await our students. Thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us to learn more about these enriching opportunities.

Welcome to Our Student Teachers

Finally, we are delighted to welcome student teachers from Ratobangala School who have joined us for their induction and orientation. Over the coming weeks, they will be observing our teaching practices, learning from our experienced staff and contributing to our vibrant learning environment. We look forward to sharing our educational expertise with them and supporting their development as future educators.

Little Yetis

This week in Little Yetis, we had a spook-tacular time exploring all things pumpkin! The children enjoyed a special selection of stories, including Room on the Broom, sparking lots of excitement and imagination. Our sensory area was full of hands-on fun, the children explored pumpkin messy play, squished orange playdough, and even hunted for hidden letters among the rice and googly eyes!In our craft area, the children got creative making spider headbands while counting to eight, and had a blast with ghost marble painting using black cards and white paint. Outdoors, there was plenty of active play with an October twist, an obstacle course, water and sand play, and broom painting on large sheets of paper. The orange noodle spider hunt was a big hit too, with tweezers and teamwork put to the test! It was another fantastic week full of imagination, sensory exploration, and as always, lots of fun! We look forward to welcoming our Little Yetis back next week for our Let’s Make Music session! 

Zonta Club and Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Initiating on the 27th of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Week was a one-week collaborative and enlightening initiative arranged by the Zonta club this week, due to October being recognised globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Pinktober. Throughout the week, club members worked actively to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage early detection and show support. 

As part of this initiative, we sold pink awareness pins every single day. The response from both students and teachers was incredibly positive, as usual, with many people enthusiastically contributing to the cause, some even donating beyond the pin price. So far, we have raised over NPR 40,000, which will be donated to Cancer Care Nepal to support various things. 

This initiative is part of an ongoing tradition, as we successfully carried out similar activities last year as well. Along with this, to continue showing solidarity throughout the week, students also wore pink. This event not only helped raise awareness but also created meaningful conversations. We are proud to have contributed to such an important cause and hope to continue spreading awareness and support in the years ahead. 

TBS wins Best School Delegation at GEMS MUN

Two weeks ago, a group of students from TBS went to a Model United Nations conference at GEMS school. The conference lasted three days and included almost 400 students from schools all around Nepal. As this event was during the Tihar holidays, the students were unaccompanied by any teachers, but had help organising the event from Mr Johnston and other teachers in the club. 

Students from TBS were all assigned a variety of different committees including: NATO, Council of Europe, IMF, WTO and even IPC. All of these committees discussed very important issues in the world and our students from TBS all researched their respective countries very well. Seeing as this was only the second ever MUN conference for most TBS students, everyone did exceptionally well. 

Other than the formal events, GEMSMUN also had events to entertain the delegates, including Motions of Entertainment, Social Sessions, a Mini Concert and finally the Delegate Dance. After a long day of debating, these events were always something to look forward to. These non-formal events were also a great opportunity to socialise with students from other schools.

During the closing ceremony, many TBS students also managed to win awards. Bilos, Upasana and Yajur all won Outstanding Delegate in their committees – IPC, NATO and WTO respectively and Aisha managed to win Best Delegate in both her committee (Council of Europe) and overall among the regional bodies group. But the most impressive award of all was won by the collective hard work of all the TBS students – The Best School Delegation award. Out of more than 20 other schools, TBS managed to place first! 

Overall, GEMSMUN was a great experience for the students. One of the participating students stated – “The first day is always challenging, but I kept having a go at speaking and became more confident later on. Overall this MUN was amazing!” The conference not only helped to improve their debating and research skills, but students were also able to form new friendships. Other students from TBS who attended the conference include – Ashish, Drukmo, Iksana and Avani.

Lincoln Swimming Invitational – “Friday Night Lights” 

On Friday 17th October, 12 swimmers from TBS took part in an evening swimming event hosted at Lincoln School. Students took part in a series of individual and relay events with all students putting in some phenomenal individual and team performances to achieve new personal best times and challenge the much larger Lincoln swim squad. 

A number of students also finished in the top 3 for their respective events and so special mentions to the following swimmers!

Snigdha – 1st 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly and 100m IM

Saksham – 1st in 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke & 100m IM, 2nd in 100m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly

Shubhangi – 2nd 100m Breaststroke and 2nd 50m Butterfly and 3rd 100m Freestyle 

Girls Medley Relay (Snigdha, Shubhangi, Tuviah, Aaradhya) – 2nd Place

Mixed Free Relay (Snigdha, Shubhangi, Saksham, Rehaan) – 2nd Place

Mixed Medley Relay (Snigdha, Shubhangi, Saksham, Mayukh) –  3rd Place

NISSA Fixtures vs KISC 

We hosted close rivals KISC on Wednesday night in our 3rd round of the NISSA league for boys football and girls basketball. 

On Wednesday, 29th October, our school displayed excellent skills in sports and teamwork in the NISSA football and basketball matches against KISC during the first week after the Tihar break. In basketball, our school scored many points and played well, but the final result was a 20-12 victory for our visitors.  The match was closer than the final scorelines suggest and, the TBSteam showed confidence and highlighted their potential for future games. 

The boys’ football team scored a fantastic 4-1 win, achieved by Saugat (Y12), Tashi (Y13), and Aryaveer (Y10). Additionally, our other players demonstrated various skills in teamwork and coordination throughout the game, which contributed to our victory.

Scouts make Rangoli

On the last Friday before Tihar, TBS Cubs and Scouts concluded their Artist badge by creating Rangolis, including a special British Scouting Overseas logo as their centerpiece. To gain their Artist badge, they have made kites, diya lamps with clay, designed and applied henna, and also made friendship bracelets. What a great conclusion to a very busy term!

Thank you to those parents who have confirmed that their child/children will be leaving TBS at the end of the term, i.e. Friday, 12th of December. Adequate notice is a requirement and avoids financial penalties for parents.  It also allows us to refund your security deposits on time and helps us to plan for the new term.

The deadline for providing the formal notice of the withdrawal of your child/children is Saturday, the 15th of November. The notice of withdrawal can be provided either by email or a written letter to Ms. Bajracharya at the admission office.

After submitting the notice of withdrawal, parents will receive a clearance form to complete the withdrawal procedure nearer the end of Term 2. Please let Ms. Bajracharya in the admissions office know should you require any school documents/references to provide to the new school.
