University Visit from Tokyo University
By Bibhushan, Basma, Ivanjali and Sayuri

On Wednesday, the 26th of August, the University of Tokyo visited The British School of Kathmandu to give Sixth Form students a brief overview of the university experience in Japan.
During the session, students were provided with more insight and important information on the course details: costs, admission and scholarship opportunities (MEXT) for international students. MEXT stands for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Japanese Government. It is a key government office in Japan that gives full-ride scholarships to international students. The representative also mentioned that despite its generous benefits, the MEXT scholarship receives few global applications, making it less competitive.
The talk also gave students a better understanding of the application process as the representatives of the University of Tokyo thoroughly explained the qualifications needed, the important application steps, and the qualities Japanese universities tend to favour in their students. Additionally, they learned about the opportunities they could be offered, campus life, and what they should expect from university life in Japan.

One of the most interesting parts of the session, according to many students who attended, was learning about student life in Japan. Students heard about the university’s accommodations, facilities, and the wide range of clubs and activities available. Insight was provided on life in Tokyo as well, highlighting aspects such as the variety of delicious food available, affordability of board costs, and the plethora of vending machines around the country that make necessities more accessible to everyone.
Overall, the visit was a valuable, informative, and inspiring opportunity for students to ask questions and learn from somebody representing a Japanese University. It helped many understand what studying abroad may be like and if they would like to consider Japan as a possible destination for their further education.

CCA Focus 2 Senior Play: “Joking Apart” by Alan Ayckbourn (Wednesday 9th December)
By Aarambha, Suyagya, Norbu (Year 11 A,M,K)

On Tuesday, the 18th of August, and Thursday, the 20th of August, senior play auditions for “Joking Apart” by Alan Ayckbourn commenced. Congratulations to the successful students who have been cast in this play.
Joking Apart is a clever comedy about a couple who seem to have it all. Set in the back garden over the course of 12 years, the story follows Richard and Anthea, a “perfect” pair whose constant success and lively mood make everyone around them feel inferior, constantly entangling and unravelling the relationships of their close ones.
Their “perfect” life ends up causing a chain reaction of jealousy and self-doubt among friends. This ranges from a tense game of lawn tennis, where Richard effortlessly crushes his business partner’s pride, to a chilly Boxing Day gathering.
Over time, the garden turns into an arena for deepening hostility among the group. In the end, their friends are left withholding quiet resentments, deep insecurities, and exhausted by the unattainable standard set by their hosts.
Don’t miss the TBS senior rendition of “Joking Apart” on December 9th in the Drama Studio, taking place during the second-to-last week of term before winter break! Make sure to mark your calendars and support the show!
Ms Mountjoy, our extraordinary drama teacher, also the key coordinator of the senior play, was asked a few questions…
We opened the discussion by asking her, “How had the auditions proceeded?”
To which she replied, “The recalls were this Thursday, and the casting proved quite challenging this year, given a high volume of incredible auditions to consider and only 11 available roles.”
We then asked her, “How will the stage be configured?”
She then explained that the seating would most likely be arranged “in the round,” with a probability of a miniature tennis court being incorporated onto the set in the drama studio.
Next up we asked her, “How long does the production take to reach its final form to be polished and ready?”
She stated that, “Preparations would continue right up till the day of the performance given the circumstances of a busy schedule across the next 2 terms, including Drama mock examinations and Winter concerts.”
Finally, we asked her about the central themes of the play
To which she replied, “The complexities of friendship and family relations, presented through a humorous comedy.”

Head Prefect Assembly – plans for the year ahead
By Sachi, Aradhya, Nessa and Savannah

As we welcome the new academic year, we also welcome the new 2026-2027 prefect team and head prefects along with their plans and ideas to improve TBS. These were shared to secondary at this week’s assembly and we interviewed one of this year’s head prefects, Tanushka to get a better understanding of their goals and ambitions. The questions we asked and answers we received include:
Q: How did you come up with the idea to improve the volleyball court?
A: I heard a lot of people who wanted to get better at volleyball like at diving but they got hurt when trying to do it and a lot of people play volleyball at lunch and break so we decided to prioritise that. This way, people can play more safely and can develop more skills over time.
Q: How did you come up with the idea to have games and competitions during lunchtime to earn house points?
A: Three years ago, they used to have house games such as football at lunch, and we saw lots of people enjoying it. We had also noted that more people were playing volleyball and basketball.
Q: How did you come up with the idea to change the house T-shirts?
A: We found that the materials used in the latest design were itchy and made people smell bad, however, with the FoBISIA shirts, there weren’t many complaints.
Q: In the mural, will the whole school work on it together?
A: It would be hard to get every student to help; however, we were hoping that we could have a mural drawing competition and people could put votes on which they like the most. For the whole-school mural, we could also have art students or student volunteers help.
Q: How are you going to achieve student-led social media?
A: We were thinking of sending Ms Drumm the photos we want on the school social media; however, it has to get approved first.
Q: How long did it take you and Gaurav to come up with these ideas?
A: These were ideas which mostly came from others and it didn’t take long since we had the whole team help with it.
Q: What are some other plans for the future?
A: Right now our main focus is on the volleyball court and house shirts.
We hope that these targets get implemented quickly and we can see them swiftly in action soon and throughout the year. On top of that we look forward to seeing what this year’s prefect team will achieve and do to make TBS a better place.
