As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting our community partner schools we have also welcomed this year’s cohort of student teachers from Rato Bangala school.

They joined us for an induction and orientation session led by our community coordinator, Ms Maharhjan where they went through expectations whilst on placement, our confidentiality & safeguarding agreement as well as the structure of the day, curriculum content and a tour of the primary section of the school.

This also links well to our focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) particularly to Goal 4, Quality Education. We aim to raise the quality of education by supporting the  rigorous training programs that student teachers undertake and ensuring they are able to observe best practice and learn our strategies to deliver an exceptional education here at TBS.

We are very excited to welcome them to their placements starting from Monday 9th September.

Year 10 Focus

Year 10 are settling into their new IGCSE curriculum, which for the first time in their schooling offers students significant choice in their studies. Students are able to select three specialist subjects from a wide range of subjects which, in addition to subjects studied in Year 9, includes a new choice of Business Studies, Psychology, academic PE and, new to TBS this academic year, IGCSE photography. Year 10 also choose one world language from a choice of Mandarin, French and Spanish.

The arrival of our new Photography and Art Teacher Ms Daly, has raised the profile of photography across the school and generated some exciting work within our Year 10 cohort, where they have been learning about digital and film photography and how to develop their own prints in the well resourced TBS photography darkroom. This week IGCSE and ASDAN students have created a series of photograms and cyanotypes, processes that are over 180 years old, inspired by natural forms and the work of photographic pioneers Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins. We would like to highlight some excellent work by Arka Ghosh, Jase Baidya, Drukmo Mukpo and Thalia Shrestha.

Duke of Edinburgh International Award

All Year 10 students are being introduced to their Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) international award this term. Originating in the UK over 60 years ago, the DoE international award is a well recognised certification of all round student development and highly regarded by both universities and employers. It is also a great platform for students to develop all 5 of the TBS Cs of challenge, community, creativity, compassion and confidence whilst deepening friendships and having fun at the same time.

The Year 10 expedition will include a DoE bronze level adventurous journey where students embark on a 2 day self-supported hiking and camping expedition, which is an excellent way to develop their confidence, their ability to work in a team and to challenge them in an environment that, for many, is outside their usual comfort zone.

Year 10 are preparing for their expedition with year group training after school during Friday period 8 clubs. After an initial introduction to the DoE award, they are now being trained in basic first aid, camp craft and expedition cooking. The first group were amazed at how tasty their meal was using very simple one pot cooking and ingredients that can easily be carried in a backpack.

To complete the DoE bronze award, students need to complete a qualifying expedition, scheduled for April next year, as well as a sustained (3 month) commitment to a volunteering, physical and skills activity. Students who achieve a DoE award have demonstrated commitment in a wide range of different skill sets and have learnt about the benefits of donating their time to support others in the community.

The DoE team at TBS is always looking to broaden the volunteering opportunities that are available to our students and if any parents have connections that may be suitable for a weekly three month volunteering placement, our DoE Coordinator Ms Saez- Martinez would love to what from you so we can explore possible collaborations further.

Thank you to those parents who have confirmed that your child/children will be leaving TBS at the end of the term, i.e. Wednesday, 2nd October 2024. Adequate notice is a requirement and avoids financial penalties for parents. It also allows us to refund your security deposits on time and helps us to plan for the new term.

The deadline for providing the formal notice of the withdrawal of your child/children is Sunday, 15th of September 2024. The notice of withdrawal can be provided either by email or written letter to Ms. Manisha Bajracharya at the admission office.

After submitting the notice of withdrawal, parents will receive a clearance form nearer the end of Term 1, in order to complete the withdrawal procedure. Please let Ms. Bajracharya in the admissions office know should you require any school documents/references to provide to the new school.

Late notice of withdrawal (or providing no notice) and failure to submit the form or return the school’s resources may fully or partially affect refunding the security deposit.
