It feels quite surreal how quickly time has gone now that we’re nearing the end of Term 3. We’d just like to take a moment to appreciate the 2021/2022 prefect team. 

It was a tricky year to navigate as prefects, but the team surpassed expectations in every way. A huge well done to: Nabodita, Shastraveer, Vishwas, Aaj, Harira, Vibek, Meghna, Ritu, Abayaa, and Eshaan for everything you’ve all contributed to the team this year. 

An especially huge thank you to our two head prefects: Seoyun and Roisin, for being so resilient, hard-working and caring no matter the circumstances. We really appreciate you.  

 This week:

The new student leadership team introduced themselves to Key Stage 3 and 4 during assemblies on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was amazing to get to see each individual push themselves out of their comfort zone to be able to shine and connect with the audience in their own ways. We’re incredibly excited to see what our team will have in store for next year!

Our head prefects were in charge of organising and planning Y13’s farewell assembly on Thursday. It was bittersweet commemorating, celebrating and watching a chapter of people’s school lives at TBS coming to a close. Thank you to everyone who performed or spoke at the assembly. Again, thank you to our head prefects for putting so much work into organising this event!

We hope you are able to enjoy and relax with your families and friends over the Easter holidays. To those of you who have exams when we come back from Easter: good luck with revision! Just remember to take time to wind down and do things you enjoy too.

Our second round of expeditions saw our Year 6 students heading out to Hattiban and Nargajung national park. Both classes had an exciting day of rock climbing in the national park and also took part in team building activities, including putting up and taking down their tents at the Hattiban camping site. 

We were so impressed by the way the students worked together collaboratively in an outdoor environment and their enthusiasm and enjoyment of camping, especially as it was almost 3 years since they last went on an expedition!

They used the learning power of resilience on both the hike up to Hattiban and the hike through Nargajung, keeping their spirits up by encouraging each other and supporting their classmates so well when they attempted the climbing wall. For some of the students this was a very intense challenge; we were so proud of the way they faced and overcame the challenges put to them. 

They enjoyed an evening of exploration, games and a treasure hunt, before enjoying a wonderful dinner of dhal bhat. They really excelled in an outdoor learning environment and loved the opportunity to share time with their friends, although they were still quoting Shakespeare! 

Many of them have asked if we can go again in Term 4!

Our debut TBS Shakespeare Festival has started fabulously with a trio of Shakespeare Rocks, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performances on both Tuesday and Thursday were spectacular and it was wonderful to see the Year 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 students performing Shakespearian theatre with such character and flair. The acting was such high quality that the audience was mesmerised and truly believed their characters; the singing was perfectly pitched and the drumming brought suspense and drama to the scenes. The Performing Arts team were extremely proud, as were all the teaching team involved.

Well done to the students who performed, however we still have more to come! The Shakespeare festival continues after the Easter break with the Year 8 and 9 students who will be performing Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet.

Year 9 has had a fantastic Term 3. The effort they have been putting into all of their academics, sporting endeavours and extra- curricular activities has been absolutely phenomenal. It has been great seeing everything returning to normal and the students thriving in the school community.

In this term, we have had a large number of events taking place with the Year 9’s involved. They have been regularly taking part in the house games in PE, where a different sport was played each week. Adding to this, they have been rehearsing extremely hard for their part in the ‘Shakespeare Festival’ which is, excitingly, coming up after the break. Also, there were a number of students that were involved in the Down Syndrome Awareness day. The students had to wear odd socks to raise awareness for Down Syndrome and it gave students the chance to educate themselves on this particular topic. It has been absolutely incredible seeing so many of the students throwing themselves into a wide range of different activities. Below are some of the highlights:

In Year 9 Geography, the students have been looking at Mountains and Glaciers. They were tasked with creating a presentation on a specific mountain range from around the world. Following this, they had to present to the rest of the class and educate them about their mountain range. Some of the presentation skills displayed were absolutely fantastic and it was great to see so many students confidently speaking in front of others.

Adding to this, the students were asked to create Glacier infographics that collated their knowledge. The infographics were extremely informative and colourful which really helped to consolidate what they have already learnt.

Y9 Chinese recently produced a very high quality presentation on promoting a holiday destination. They tried to persuade their classmates to join their tours with their amazingly designed posters. At the end, each of them was given two ‘star tokens’ so that they can ‘buy’ tickets to the tours they think are the most appealing to them.

The students have also been writing about ‘My Teacher’. The writing includes nationality, appearance and personality.

As mentioned previously, the students in Y9 have been competing in the House games this term. Each student belongs to either Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga and Makalu houses. It has been amazing to see the students putting their all into a range of different sports and creating such a great atmosphere. Below are some of the winners.

Well done for such a fantastic term Year 9!

Arka in Y7 has been working extremely hard on a storyboard on Space Travel. He has shown great understanding of what it is and different components that are found within it. It is great to see Arka going the extra mile and really putting maximum effort into all of his work.

Enthusiastic Art and Media students from Year 9 to Year 11 were lucky enough to meet professional photographer Emily Polar this week to hear more about photography and working life in a creative industry. TBS is so grateful to Emily for sharing her stunning work and her advice with students.

Thomas Bell, the writer of Kathmandu, a personal history of the city’s rich history, talked to our History and Sociology students today, sharing his experiences as a journalist and historian and answering their questions about life as a writer.
