Year 1 & 2 Camp TBS

Following up from last week’s article on Camp TBS, here are some photos of the children’s highlights!

We set up a new STEM area as a part of our learning in the class. The children are learning about recycling and they have been using various junk materials to make some useful things for class or home. They come up with a design, choose the required materials and then they turn it into something useful. This week they made a tissue paper box for class and a piggy bank to take home.

Early Years Sports Day

It was great seeing so many children and family members joining the Early Years Sports Day on Monday! The (aspirant) secondary student leaders did an amazing job in organising and supporting all the different activities. Have a look at the photos for an impression of this wonderful, sporty event!

As part of our understanding and celebrating differences month, Tuesday the 21st March was World Downs Syndrome Day. To recognise the differences in all of us and in our friends with Downs Syndrome, we wore odd socks which are the same shape as chromosomes!

Lots of the children learnt the reasons why we wore odd socks on this day, I wonder if they can remember and tell you why?!

Primary Community ambassadors 

As part of our Neurodiversity Celebration Week & to celebrate National Down Syndrome day, on Tuesday 21st March Ms Smithers, Ms Moulds and Mr Timsena took the Primary community ambassadors: Muntaqim (4M), Shivansh (4A), Zoya (5H), Nysa (6A), Adeline (6E); and the Aspiring leaders from secondary: Mateo, Saivi, Kashvi, Paridhi, Victoria, Maulik, Ashish, Anwen, Adiba, Saanvi, Reeya and Upasana  to visit the Down Syndrome Society Nepal. Here are some of our students’ accounts:

Visiting the Down Syndrome Society Nepal was an exquisite and consequential experience that I will forever cherish. It was a powerful and interesting opportunity to show kind compassion and bring joy to these wonderful and diverse individuals. It was heartwarming to see how much they enjoyed simple tasks and how much they appreciated our help.

Working with the kids was both enjoyable and enlightening. It was amazing to see how unique and inspirational they were, and I learned so much from them. Being able to help them learn new things and participate in creative activities was truly fulfilling.

One of the children I met, Ankit, was a joy to work with. We drew and coloured together, and I loved how he always had a smile on his face. It was delightful to see how easily we became friends and how much he enjoyed our time together.

Overall, volunteering at the Down Syndrome Society was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that was enjoyable, fun, and fulfilling. I am grateful for the experience and hope to be able to do it again, as it was an amazing and memorable experience.

Secondary has been bustling with activity since the start of the year, and we are excited to share some of the recent events and accomplishments with you.

In preparation for their upcoming final exams, TBS students in Year 11, 12 and 13 started the year with a series of mock exams. The exams provided students with an opportunity to practise their exam-taking skills and identify areas where they may need additional support. TBS teachers provided students with feedback on their performance, which will help guide their revision and exam preparation in the lead-up to the final exams. The mock exams are part of TBS’s commitment to providing students with a rigorous and supportive academic program that prepares them for success in their future studies and careers.

On February 4th, TBS hosted its second cross-curricular day, which provided students with a unique opportunity to explore connections between different subject areas. Students from different year groups worked together on projects that integrated elements of different subjects. The day was a great success, with students showcasing their creativity and collaborative skills. The event demonstrated TBS’s commitment to providing a holistic and integrated education that promotes cross-curricular learning and fosters intellectual curiosity.

In February, TBS held its Secondary Sports Day, where students from Years 7 to 13 participated in a range of athletic events, both track and field. The atmosphere was electric, with students cheering on their classmates and displaying sportsmanship throughout the day.

In March, TBS participated in the FOBISIA games in Bangkok. The TBS team comprised students from Years 7 to 9 who competed in a range of sporting events against other schools from across Asia. The students displayed excellent sportsmanship and achieved great results, including several medals in various sports.

TBS has had a busy and successful start to the year, with events and achievements aimed at promoting the 5Cs. As we draw this term to close, we are looking forward to the next and want to let you know about some exciting things we have planned: 

• Year 11 will have two taster days on June 15th and 16th where they can try their A Level subjects. 
• Year 12 will return back to school after their exams for two further teaching weeks from 12th June to 23rd June
• Bridging week: For the week beginning the 19th June, Year 11 will be taking part in our Bridging Week. This year the focus of the week is Work Experience. Students will have the opportunity to apply to different work experience projects: external work experience at local business; volunteering within our TBS Primary School and some of our local Community Partner Schools; or completing an Academic Project where students would be lead in researching a topic area which they may wish to study when they move on to Higher Education. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for our students to start gaining the valuable experience and skills needed as they look on to their future pathways and university applications. 
• Enrichment Week is happening the last week of the academic year.  Previously, this has been referred to as ICE Week, but we are launching a brand new exciting program of activities for your children to get involved in.  We currently have 14 different activities to choose from, ranging from Nepali Cultural Pottery to Photography.  Many of the activities on offer will include a trip.  The proposed activities will be presented to the students in the first week back after the holidays, where they will then need to opt for their favourite choice.  A list of possible activities will also be given to parents.

During cross-curricular day on February 4, 2023, students in Years 6-10 interviewed members of the TBS community about important events in their lives. They compiled these interviews into living history narratives that tell the story of some of the fascinating people who live and work around the school. We will be publishing one of the resulting stories each week.
