Our school mascot, the TBS Yeti has been keeping a close eye on our Primary school and wider community recently. Yeti has been looking out for examples of the learning powers and the 5 Cs that help us become the best versions of ourselves!

During our Brainwaves assembly last week all class teachers shared wonderful examples of how their learners had demonstrated their learning powers. 

There were great demonstrations of resilience, respectfulness, cooperation, responsibility, thoughtfulness, adaptability, inquiring skills and communication across the Primary School. 

Choosing the TBS Champion for August was a tricky job for Ms Mould and Ms Drumm, however Ms Moulds was very eager to share some other members of our community that have not only demonstrated all the learning powers and 5Cs in August, but also demonstrated them over the summer holidays too! 

The TBS Champions for August were our incredibly hard working, resistant and adaptable Grounds Staff Team. Congratulations and thank you.

This week’s assembly focused on confidence. We are delighted to see so many of our students showing huge self-confidence in their curricular and extra-curricular activities. This week many students have had the confidence to take part in new extra-curricular activities, have had the confidence to ask for help when they needed in class and had the confidence to take risks with their work. Well done secondary students. 

Last week, the new Student Leadership team held its first official meeting! There were some great discussions about productivity, and goals we want to achieve, especially with regards to building stronger community bonds post-Covid. We look forward to having an active, successful year!

What is dengue?

• Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection, transmitted by females of the species Aedes aegypti and Ae. Albopictus
• They breed in clean water and proliferate in household containers such as those used for domestic water storage, decorative plants, a variety of rain-filled habitats – including used tyres, discarded food/beverage containers, blocked gutters and buildings under construction
• These mosquitoes bite 2 hrs. after sunrise and 2 hrs. before sunset
• Four distinct serotypes of the dengue virus can cause infection (DEN-1 to DEN-4)

Signs and symptoms of dengue:

1. Severe headache
2. Pain behind the eyes
3. Severe muscle and joint pains
4. Nausea and vomiting
5. Muscle and joint pain

• There is no specific treatment for dengue/severe dengue, but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates from 20% to below 1%

• Recovery from infection by one provides lifelong immunity against it, while cross-immunity to the other serotypes is partial and temporary
• Subsequent infections by other serotypes increase the risk of developing severe dengue

Public health control depends largely on vector control:

• Environmental control is the best approach as the results are likely to be permanent
• Combining two or more vector control methods obtain maximum results with minimum efforts
• Avoid staying in dark, outdoor places such as brushwood, pavilions, or the shade of a tree during the hours when Aedes mosquito is active
• People should wear full sleeves to avoid mosquito contact and use repellant for personal protection
• Install mosquito nets to doors and windows so that mosquitoes can’t get in
• Use mosquito nets to protect children and old people who may rest during the day
• Use mosquito coils, electric vapour, mats, and ointments during the daytime as well.
• Once any member of the family gets dengue fever, the infected member should be isolated under a bed net till they recover fully to prevent Aedes mosquito bites and spreading dengue to other persons.

*There is no effective vaccine for dengue that can be used programmatically.
